Director’s Message I first saw Millie a few years ago at Toby’s Dinner Theatre near Baltimore. It wasn’t my first choice to go see. In fact, I didn’t want to see it at all, BUT we had received free tickets to a show there, and it was the only one that was playing on a weekend we had free. Isn’t it interesting how things turn out? I can honestly say that Millie is a show that has everything in it – including the kitchen sink (Act Two, Scene Four). Kidnapping, white slavery, Mandarin Chinese, prohibition, and tap dancing stenogs – what more can you ask for in a musical? Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It's a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. A time when, according to Vanity Fair, it was stylish for women to raise their skirts and bob their hair. Based on the movie of the same name, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of memorable songs and bright dance numbers. Thoroughly Modern Millie is filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men, tap dancing stenogs, and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate. The cast and crew has had a great time rehearsing for this show, and I’m sure that will be quite evident in their performances this weekend. I have truly enjoyed being able to direct this show, and I thank each and every one in the cast and crew for making this the wonderful show that it is. So sit back, relax, and journey back in time with us to 1922! Ken Johnson Synopsis The action takes place in New York, New York in 1922.
