"Hello Dolly" Program |
The Community Players of Salisbury PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Greetings! I welcome you to the first production of the 64th season for Community Players of Salisbury. One of the most wonderful things about live theatre is the escape from life’s pressures it provides. During such difficult times for our country, the need for escape seems clear. We pray for the victims of September 11 and salute the troops and our leaders whose decisions and sacrifices ensure our freedom. As always, I wish to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to our patrons for their continued support. Without them, we would not be able to continue to bring you live theater. I also would like to thank our program advertisers for their support and ask that you patronize their businesses when a need should arise. If you would like to join our list of patrons, become an advertiser or a member, please feel free to contact an usher, cast or crew member for more information. We look forward to hear from you. We are pleased to present our production of Hello, Dolly! Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
In preparation to direct this show I discovered that in one of the New York reviews of the 1964 opening of Hello, Dolly! the show was described as a “musical comedy dream.” That led me to consider the formula for such a “dream”—larger than life characters, memorable music and a topsy-turvy story. In some shows you are lucky to get one of those elements—Hello, Dolly! clearly has them all, and, with all due to respect to contemporary musicals that tackle serious social issues on a grand scale (Rent and Miss Saigon to name but a few), Hello, Dolly! demands only that you sit back, relax, prepare to laugh and tap your toes. Having said that, Hello, Dolly! does ask and answer a few interesting questions. For example: Can a woman be tough AND feminine? Can money buy happiness? Isn’t it okay to sometimes “bend” the truth a little if the goal is a good one? The beauty of a show like “Hello, Dolly!” is that while it may ask you to deal with those issues, it doesn’t want to bring you down in the process. I believe that musical comedies were designed to let us escape life’s pressures for a few hours. I am hard pressed to come up with a more enjoyable escape route than Hello, Dolly! While Hello, Dolly! is yours for but a few hours, many people have been involved with it for several hours a week for the last eight weeks. While the word “Director” plastered across my forehead these many weeks, I did not pull this off by myself. I don’t think I’ve ever worked with such a talented, hard-working ensemble. When the Community Players persuaded me to accept the challenge of directing this show by guaranteeing that the technical elements would be covered, leaving me to concentrate entirely on the performance element, I was skeptical. I should not have been! Endless thanks from me to an incredible production team: Carol Alex saw to it. Ernie Matthews and Charles Doherty built it. Phyllis Oldham made it sound great. Martha Pfeiffer made it move. Sallie Ridgway dressed it up. Sarah Batton found it. Amber Wilkerson always said “No Problem!” In addition I am grateful to Lisa Robbins for not only taking on an incredibly demanding role, but also finding time to help me overcome some staging challenges. Thanks to Joanne Little for endless patience and nimble fingers. Finally, and I say without hesitation, most importantly, I thank my wonderful wife and beautiful children who understand and tolerate my passion for this time-consuming hobby. Thank you, Darrell Mullins Director
